Outcome
We discovered that the most projected jobs in the cartography field in 2021 are located in California (2048), Texas (1837), North Carolina (659), Florida (640), and Oregon (532). Although these may be the states with the most jobs available, the states that are projected to have the most growth in the job market by 2021 are Missouri (64%), Maryland (52%), South Dakota (48%), Texas (41%) and South Carolina (34%). Therefore, these states would be the best to look into if one was searching for a job in cartography. Some states, however, have a declining job market. Some states to avoid include Maine (-23%), Alabama (-19%), Arkansas (-19%), Kansas (-15%) and Iowa (-3%).
The rise in cartography in the early 2000’s is potentially due to the increased use of GIS technology. This increase happened in response to cheaper, faster, higher power computers, more software options, data availability and launch of new satellites used for remote sensing.

What does this mean at the national level?
When expanding to look at the field at a national level and looking at the trend of national employment, it is evident that the field does not suffer many lay-offs and many more people get hired every year; furthermore, the field continues to grow in the forecasted years. The pie chart that displays the distribution of cartographers and photogrammetrists shows that it is a prominent geological field across the coast and west of the Mississippi River. This field is mostly tied with working with the government at either the local, state or federal level. It should be expected that states with a lower number of employees have most of their jobs tied to the government while larger states with a greater volume of employees like Texas and California are the locations that most likely have more privatized jobs. From the multiple data and projections made in this study, it is recommended that an aspiring graduate who is seeking employment through private industries should focus their efforts in Texas, California, South Dakota or South Carolina. This is due to the fact that these states have an ever-increasing job market. If they wish to work with the government, then any state is desirable because the demand is unanimous.

What do they do?
Cartographers and Photogrammetrists collect, analyze, and interpret geographic information provided by geodetic surveys, aerial photographs, and satellite data. They research, study, and prepare maps and other spatial data in digital or graphic form for legal, social, political, educational, and design purposes. Cartographers and photogrammetrists may work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to design and evaluate algorithms, data structures, and user interfaces for GIS and mapping systems. Entry level positions into this field require a bachelor's degree in cartography, geography, or surveying. In certain states, further licensing for surveying and photogrammerists are required.
