Career Opportunities for Graduating Geology Students

     The purpose of this project is to map the aspects of career opportunities for graduating students. These aspects include how many jobs have been available in various occupational fields and how many jobs there are projected to be per state in the next 5 years. By comparing the statistics of past and current data with the projected data for the future, graduate students will be able to intelligently decide what state is the best fit for their prospective job field based on job availability and demand.

Petroleum Engineers

Petroleum engineers design ways to extract oil and natural gas from deposits below the Earth’s surface as well as look for other alternatives to increase the productivity of oil and gas from older wells. Petroleum engineers work closely with geologists to decide what type of well to drill, what equipment to use and monitor the progress of the entire drilling process.

Enviromental

Environmental geology includes: managing geological and hydrogeological resources such as fossil fuels, minerals, water (surface and ground water), and land use. studying the earth's surface through the disciplines of geomorphology, and edaphology; defining and mitigating exposure of natural hazards on humans.

Methodology

Our data is extrapolated based on the forecasting tool within Excel 2016. The tool compares historical data for previous years and creates a predicted future data for the subsequent years. The forecast is based on the AAA version of the Exponential Smoothing (ETS) algorithm. The ETS algorithm works differently than the linear growth function as it exponentially decreases the weighted importance of data from previous years. Therefore, the most recent historical data influences the forecasted values, rather than a linear prediction over the past few decades.

Sₓ = αyₓ₋₁ + (1−α)Sₓ₋₁    0<α≤1     x≥3

S=Smoothed Observation

Y= Original Observation

Subscripts= refer to time periods

X= any time period

This tool works by selecting a timeline, in this case the parameters were from the earliest year data was collected to the year we wanted to project to, 2021. Then, values for each year are selected and the tool created a visual graph as well as a table containing the projected data for years 2017 through 2021. This process was repeated for each state in order to compile a national map for each projected year.

Fields Studied

 Cartographers and Photogrammetrists

Collect, analyze, and interpret geographic information provided by geodetic surveys, aerial photographs, and satellite data. Research, study, and prepare maps and other spatial data in digital or graphic form for legal, social, political, educational, and design purposes. May work with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Mining and Geological Engineers

Mining and Geological Engineers help to design and regulate the industry of extracting valuable minerals for manufacturing and production purposes. They help regulate safety procedures and improve efficiency for extraction of coal, metals, and other minerals.
